TREATMENT OF MR. GRIFFIN
REFUSED ADMISSION TO I AUSTRALIA ; Presg A lenniaiion —nopyristht- ! Wellington, November !)• j The treatment accorded Mr. Gerald j Griffin, Wellington, who was recently re- j fused permission by Australian Customs , officials to land at Sydney after he had failed to pass a test in the Dutch langu- j age, was considered to-day by the na- j tion'al executive of the New Zealand Lab- j our Party. At the conclusion of the , meeting the following statement was is- , sued:— | "The action of the Commonwealth auth- I orities in refusing to allow Mr. Gerald j Griffin to land in Australia was consid- j ered and it was decided that strong rep- i resentations be made to the New Zea- j land Government. The executive was | unanimous in its condemnation of the j treatment accorded to Mr. Griffin and will urge the Government to demand an explanation from the Commonwealth j Government together with adequate reparation and compensation for Mr. Griffin, j Setting up an education test in the Dutch language was considered most unfair, and j the refusal to allow New Zealand citi- j zens to land in Australia on such a pre- i text is an outrage on the freedom of the individual calculated to endanger the j good relations which ha've hitherto exist- j ed between two countries."
