Mrs R. Tyrer gave an afternoon tea party on Monday. Those present were: Mesdames H. Kirkwood, G. Hall, Thorpe, Furrie, E. H. Young, Amess, Miss Jones (Auckland).

Mrs R. Masters entertained a few friends on Monday afternoon. Among those present were Mesdames H. Good, Fredric, Tyrer, Malone, Coleman, Neal Douglas, McCullough, Nowell.

Mrs Jeffries was hostess on Tuesday afternoon, when the Portland Auction Bridge Club met at ner resi " dence. Among those present were: Mesdames Coleman, Jardine, Fume, Malone, R. Curtis, Cresswell, J. W. Spence.

Many bonfire parties were held on the fifth. Quite a large number witnessed the fireworks and burning of the Guy at St. Mary's School, where there was a wonderful bonfire. Mrs Allen also had a large party to help set off the fireworks.

Mrs Hessel of Kaponga gave an afternoon party yesterday. Tho3e present were Mesdames Macalister, Fredric, Truby King, TJniacke, Hunt, Lyons, D. Morris, Craig, Gray. Davis. Winter. Bennett. The hostess receiv ed her guests in a floral crepe frock with coatee. An apology was sent from Mrs Steven, who was unavoidably absent.

The Stratford Croquet Club gave an enjoyable croquet party to welcome the.new members. Present were "Mesdames Hillock (president), Moon, R. H. White, Davis, Cooper, Weston, Bamfield,' Coward, Gatton, D. White, Childs, Butchart, Vinsen. Knight, Dickspn, Blick, Summerfield, Klecman. Many amusing competitions were played and the ladies of the domniittee provided a very daintiy tea. * # * The local golf club was well represented yesterday afternoon at the official, closing of the club in Hawera by Mesdames R. C. Williams,. Carter, Armstrong, J. W. Boon, H. Bishop, W. Boon, Pope, Power. Knewstubb and Miss M. Sangster. Mrs R. Fryday won the putting competition. Mrs C. Williams won tlie long drive and Miss M. Sangster won the bogey match. It was a lovely afternoon and a delightful tea was pro vided. ! # * * I

A committee of girls organised a very jolly dance for Miss Carman in the Windsor Tea Rooms on Thursday night. Many pretty frocks were worn. Miss Carman was wearing a becoming jentia blue floral georgette. Among those were Mrs Ennis, the Misses- i.inrtop, M. MeCluggage, W. Rawles, M. Smart, I. McCready, P. Sanderson, P. McCready, D. The Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss Keightley and her partner, Mr Goodman. Music was supplied by Mr Waite.

The seventh birthday celebrations of the Stratford branch of the W.D. F.U. held on Tuesday were most hap ' py. On Thursday afternoon Mrs C. C. Phillips of Midhirst, with a committee of ladies, organised a very successful euchre party to Help to augment the funds of the Blue Baby (Beverley Phillips) in aid of the W.D.F.U. relief fund. There was a good attendance of Division members and friends, and .the effort proved successful. The winners of the euchre prizes were Mrs J. Wiildon 1, Mrs L. Vickers "2. A competition was won by Miss L. Dill. A dainty afternoon te'a was served by [the hostesses, Mesdames C. C. Phillips, Dill snr., Dill jnr., Meads, C. Phillips and Howard. On Thursday afternoon a pleasant time was spent at the Methodist Tennis courts, when a Yankee tourna merit was held. Misses M. Ward and C. Clark tied for first prize and Mr Vern Henry won the men's Amongst those playing were Mesdames Priest, Rowe, Skuse, Misses E. and J. Foster, M. and P. Ward, D. A jolly little tea party was heid at the Avon Croquet Pavilion on Wednesday afternoon, when Mrs Alger on behalf of the club welcomed the new members and social members, and wished them every success. Mrs. Short replied, thanking the club members generally for their welcome and for the enjoyable time they had spent. Winners of competitions were: Golf croquet, Mrs Short 1, Mrs Macßae 2; Spot croquet, Mrs Macßae. Amongst those present were Mesdames Alger, Rodgers, Buckley, Hall, Buirke, Moorhouso, Galbraith, Coilingwood, Lampshiro, Lamplough, Coldwell, Ross, Macßae, Bryce, Hughes, Bulman, Jenkins, Short, Scddon, Misses M. A most enjoyable and jolly gift Party was given by Mrs Lindop for Miss J. Carman, who is to be mar ried shortly. Those present were Mes. dame s Carman, R. Carryer, Misses Carman (guest of honour), Burmester D. Keightley, M. Melville, Wyn Rawles, I. McCready, D. Pellett, K. Dickson, B. Keightley, M. McCluggage. Miss Carman received many beautiful a'nd useful gifts from her friends with many congratulations and best wishes for a very happy future. There were many amusing competitions. Mrs R -Carryer, Miss M. Burmester, and Miss K. Dickson won prizes. The evening ended all too soon.

There was a large attendance at the Masonic euchre party and dance held in the Masonic Hall, Broadway South, on Thursday night. The music for the dance wa o supplied by Vern Henry's Valencia Dance Band. Mrs A. Yarndley was hostess of a most delightful bridge, and tennis party yesterday afternoon. Mrs Yarndley received her guests in a charming frock of safron crepe.
