AUSTRALIANS BEATEN IN FOURTH RUGBY TEST

South Africans Win by 11

There was warm, breezy weather for the fourth Rugby test played at Port Elizabeth to-day, when South Africa beat Australia by 11 to nil. The half-time score was 5 to nil. Twenty thousand spectators were present. Turner and Venter were unable to play owing to injuries. The first spell was uneventful, the Africans using the line and winning most of the scrums. Poor place-kicking by Cowper cost the Wallabies points. After 25 minutes’ play White scored a spectacular try which Osier converted. In the second spell de Villiers, who suffered a kick on the head, came on again and Biilman owing to an ankle injury joined the pack, Sturtridge replacing him as fly-half. The Springboks continued to dominate the play through the forwards and S. Prouw scored a try, Osier failing with the kick. Brand landed a penalty goal. The Australians were mostly bottled up in their own territory. The results of the first three Tests were: First, South Africa won by 17 points to 3; second, Australia won by 21 points to 6; and third, South Africa won by 12 points to 3.

Many Cafes and Saloons Closed

GERMAN PURITY DRIVE Berlin, Aug. 17. The police are organising an energetic drive against cafes and saloons of a questionable character. More than 21 saloons have been closed down already. The proprietors of some resorts attempted to evade the firm hand of the new authorities by sounding patriotic notes and conspicuously displaying the Nazi colours. A few even had their waiters and maids dressed in brown shirts.

The police considered this an outrage on decency, as well as an offence against the law for the protection of national symbols.
