CHAMPIONSHIPS Press Association— Copyright Napier, Feb. 22. —In face of threatening weather the. benches at the .Napier Municipal Baths were again packed tonight for the final programme of the national swimming champion-, shipii. ... ... .. . . „ The outstanding event was the 500 yards inter-centre squadron race Which at times brought the public to its feet. Canterbury won by a margin of seven yards, the time being 5.2 1-5, front Aukland and Hawke’s Bay. The men’s 440 yards was won com-, fortably by Lindsay 20 yards, with Frankham 8 yards ahead of Bullivant. The time was 5.21. The winner swam easily throughout, covering the .first 100 yards in 61s. From then on there was scarcely' any doubt of the result. Prom the start of the ladies’ 440 yards Miss Leydon swam away, from Miss Ludlow, finally clocking 6.0 1-5, •only 4-5 s behind the record. There' was a gap of 20 yards at the finisu. The inter-club 100 yards men’s breaststroke was won by Stone (Napier) by a bare touch from Smith (Manawatu) and S. Wright (Teawa) in 1.27 1-5. Miss Webster was the sole starter in tlie 220 ladies’ breaststroke. She covered the distance in the excellent time of 3.33 2-5. Other results are: 220 yards inter-club handicap—First heat; C. . McKenzie {Canterbury), 1, R. W. Girling. (Taranaki) 2, C. Cauldwell (Canterbury) 3, Time 2.39 3-5. Second, heat: F. Clarke (Wellington), 1, C. M., Robertsoh , (Wept Coast) 2, L. Bissett (Napier) 3. Time, 2.43 2-5. Final: McKenzie 1, Girling 2, Robertson 3. Time 2.38 4-5,, The polo championship was wtty by Canterbury, which beat Auckland by 2 goals tp 1, after a four-minulo extension of time. Stokes scored the winning goal. The public was on its toes in the 50 yards invitation scratch race. W. Whareatu (South Auckland) won ,a whirlwind race by U yards from D. H. Symes (Canterbury) and E. McConville (Canterbury) in' 24 2,-ss, slicing the record by 3-ss. There was a bare touch between second and third.
