TENNIS

jf . The Stratford Club Notes on the players * (By “Volley.’’) J. W. Hale, who still retains top position on the ladder, is playing Hefy-good tennis this season. He has jw good knowledge, of court craft, and is a player to be reckoned with. At the N net he is one of the best. T.pßoylc* whpi has i just reached second ladder, is one of the most improved players in the club. Ho has an exceptionally fine idrivoiiaadiekeepk, his, opppnents.guessing., Either' across the coiirt or down Hie sideline it is a very 68f■fetetlvc -'-shotP ’ His* backhand is what it ought to be, although ho has been,.payingfmore attention;to it lately. He also is a good not player.

1 C. Ennis has not played a great deal of tennis this season, and needless to say! °»e' - soon slips without practice: It is a pity he cannot give mpre tiino to the game, as ho is a player above the average.

W. T. Hale, is like his brother, but more consistent. 'Ho also has a nice forehand put needs to strengthen Mis backhand. His service, too, is not all it might be, but is. a player alwiiys to be reckoned with.

L. B. Sahdford is the most consistent player in the club. He never bustles Himself and always disguises hiS strokes, well. He has a wonderful backhand that, generally has his opponent in difficulties. He spoils his forehand by, a', little too much clopping. His service is good. In, doubles play, he fs inclined to “poach” too frequently.

..... Ci Harris plays better in the doubles thiin in the singles. He is a fhettdy. not player and if the ball is. in his reach ho generally finalises matters. He has a nice forehand, but is Uot consistent.

E. C. A. Gaw is a player that one must; always take seriously. His service is the best in the club when on hiS game. He has some very nice strokes, but is erratic.

Men fii'rthcr down the ladder who are playing fairly consistently are F, Plalo,, R. Kelly, J. Podlcy, S. Strack, G. Hart, R. Sharrock and H. E. Lawrence, The last-mentioned player, is the oldest active member of the club and' although Lie is getting on in years he is still a force on the courts. Promising Junior players The club has. also some good junior players In the men and those , out‘slanding( ,are Rankin, McCfeady,. S. Jury, Robertson and Bourke. These boys in a few years and with plenty of practice will make good players. The Ladies for the ladies; The club is .npt so well off as it might be in lady players—in fact there is no really outstanding player. Miss Best is top and so far this season she has not? been, beaten for her, place. She has some, very good strokes, but at times is inclined to be erratic. i

Mrs. Knowstubb has also some very good Iftrokos, but does not seem to be able to strike form as she did last season. , a t j,-Mrs. Syme is a fairly consistent player and is always to be reckoned with. She is a player that tries for every ball.

„ Miss Whlher has not been on the courts much this season, but, appears to bo able to come up to scratch when called on. . Miss M- Whittle is a, player who needs plenty of practice' to keep her in form. She has some good strokes, but is weak on the backhand. , " Mrs. Weston, who is not on the • ladder this, season, i§ one of,the best lady players the club has had. She is playing fairly consistently and is very heady, If she went for the ladder she would give Miss Best a hard tussle for top. . There are some very ' promising .junior lady members, the most noticeable being Misses V. Sheahan, M. McCluggage, D. Keightlcy and L. Me) Croady. A player who has not been over a great deal is Miss R. Furriq, For a youhg player she has a great deal of promise, » Abuse of Privilege, The presence of non-members on the courts has become very noticeable lately. The position is. that, they have no right to play on the .pourts without special/ permission from the, gominittec, and in future firm measures will be taken to ensure, that the financial members shall have the courts for themselves. Visitors are welcomed at the courts, but the abuse of this privilege is manifestly ifnfair. .
