Struck His Pupil

A TEACHER FINED. AN ASSAULT CHARGE. At the Naseby Police Court last week. Thomas A; McKeenan, teacher at Weddormnrn School, was charged with assaulting Owen Fredenlck Dow, a pupil of the school, on February 19th. This lad, who is 13 years of age. stated in his evidence that ho was given a sum to do, ’but found it too difficult. The teacher assisted. him ; but still he could not do it. Defendant then hit him with In's closed fist on the right eye and struck him several other times—each time on the right eye, with the result that his eye was swollen and the side o' his nose was skinned. Four othe: pupils gave corroborative evidence. Defendant stated that he had shown the hoy how to do the sum on several occasions, but instead of doling it as he had been shown he had put down figures of his own. The lad was the best worker in the school, but was dull. Ho (defendant) did not have a strap with him. so ho hit the boy over the face with the back of his hand. The magistrate said ho could not dismiss the case as trivial, although it was not an assault in the usual way. The blow must have had considerable force. Ho always thought, hitffng with the hand or on the head was .against the . regulations. Accused would ho fined £2 and one witness’s expenses (IQs). The other witnesses did not claim expenses.
