Mr and Mrs C. How son, of Flint Road have been advised by the Minister for Defence that their second son, Rifleman Stanley Rowson, died of influenza on September sth and was buried at sea. Much sympathy will be felt with Mr and Mrs Rowson in their unfortunate loss. Rifleman

Rowson left with the 40th Reinforcement, and his death comes as a great shock to parents and friends.

On Saturday afternoon, Mr Trevor C. Simpson, who has been a member [of the literary staff of the; Herald for the past six and a-half years, was presented with a solid leather !suitcase. Mr .Simpson is being margined this week, and leaves New Plymouth to take up a position on the Auckland Herald. Mr Penn, in making the presentation, conveyed to the recipient the. best wishes of the Her--1 aid .staff for his success in his now 'position and happiness in his married life.

The death occurred at his residence, Aubrey Street, Now Plymouth, on Saturday afternoon of Mr George Barr, aged 76 years. The late Mr Barr had resided in the North Taranaki district for the past 36 years. [For some time he was farming at iPuniho, ami 16 or 17 years ago came to live in New Plymouth. He leaves a widow and family of three sons— Hears Thomas Barr (New Plymouth), Henry (Hawera), and George (Palmer ston North), 18 grandchildren and o' great-grandchildren.
