[By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] [United Press Association. * (Received 9 a.m.) , Sydney, April 20. An alarming and extraordinary accident happened to the mail train near Goal burn. A connecting rod of the engine broke and fell oy the line. The first carriage missed it, but the second struck it and was derailed. The driver was unaware of the trouble and the derailed carriage was dragged at the rate of forty miles an hour for two miles to Joppa Junction, where the couplings broke. The front wheels of the second carriage by some marvellous manner here took the up-line and the back wheels took the down-line. The carriage ran a distance of sixty yards broadside on, and stopped ( in the middle of a bridge over a creek. The remainder o fthe train, consisting of six carriages and a brake-van, containing many passengers, moved down an incline towards a dead-end, attaining a tremendous speed. A terrific smash appeared imminent, when something caused the couplings between the front and roar carriage to break, thus operating the Westinghouse brake and the carriages came to a sudden standstill. Nobody was injured.

Some empty carriages were shunted into a dead end and two were smashed to matchwood, while the platform sustained damage to the extent of £IOOO. CATTLE TRUCKS DERAILED. FALL OVER A BRIDGE. Brisbane, April 20. At train smash occurred on the Gayndah line. Seven cattle trucks left the line and two fell over a bridge into a creek. All the cattle were killed. Serious damage was done to the line, bridge, and the rolling stock.
