LADIES’ TOURNAMENT. TARANAKI BEATEX. (Per Press Association.) Welling! m, September 4 The New Zealand ladies’ hockey tournament was continued to-day in fine weather. The best game was between Wellington A and Nelson, both teams showing splendid form. The attendance of the public was about 501). Particulars arc as follows:? Hawke’s Bay defeated Taranaki by 3 goals to nil. Flay was fast and even. Taranaki’s forward team was weak, but they put up a good fight, though their snooting at goal was disappointing. Their backs put up a good defence, but the team's endeavours to make the game purely an attacking one spoilt their general play from the start. Hawke’s Bay forced tho pace, and Miss Pitt scored early in the game. All through the first spell Hawke’s Bay bully made a brilliant piece of play by sending in a terrific shot. Taranaki’s goalkeeper saved beautifully.- Towards the end of the first spell she scored again. The second spell was faster and more even, and play on both sides was greatly improved. Miss Smith scored Hawke’s Bay third goal. Mr. Muldoon refereed. The Wellington A v. Nelson match was the surprise of the day ; the former team putting up a good display against a team supposed to be vastly superior. The Wellington ladies had distinctly the better of the game, and had they been more fortunate in the last five minutes they could have prevented Nelson from scoring. Tho first spell was all in favour of Wellington, but in the second spell play was more even, especially in tho last fifteen minutes, when it got exciting. The closing stages were in favour of Nelson. The game ended in a draw, one goal each. Miss Whitmore scored for ivelson, and Miss Dement for Wellington. The game was strenuous, and some brilliant play eventuated on both sides. The local team was too slow in forward rushes. Nelson’s score came about by breach of the obstruction rule by Miss Harris in the circle. Miss Whitmore, securing the ball from a free hit, rushed in, eluding Miss Jacobsen. Mr. C. Manning was referee. Wairarapa drew with Manawatu, two each. The game was full of incident, the exposition of hockey being a pleasure to watch. Both* teams were composed 1 of young players. At tho end of the first spell Manawatu led through a good shot by Miss I. McKenzie. After resuming Miss Orr equalised matters. The last stages wore very fast., Miss Collingwood scored Manawatu’s second goal, and Miss Reid equalised for Wairarapa. Mr. G. Keall refereed. Southland beat West Coast by 2 to nil. Neither side scored in the first spall. Southland’s combination was good. Their goals wore got by Miss M. Marsh and Miss J. Marsh. Mr, D. Floyd was referee. Wanganui beat Wellington B by 6 to nil. It was a slow game, being mostly in Wanganui’s favour. The score at half-time was 2 to nil in Wanganui’s favour. Scores were made by Misses I. Perrett (4), G. Jones (1), and C. McDonald (1). Mr. Fitt refereed.
