CHRISTCHURCH NORTH SEAT.
(Per Press Association.) Christchurch, August 4. The writ for the Christchurch election was received by the Returning Officer this morning, but, owing to its having been issued in Wellington a day before the rolls closed yesterday, it was understood that the rolls would bo open again to-day, and a few people who intended to enrol to-day were cusappointed in consequence. The election has been fixed tor Thursday, August 17. If a second ballot is necessary, it will be hold a week later. Nominations close at noon on Monday, August 7. So far none have been received. Three candidates, however, arc definitely announced. They are J. 1). Hall (Opi )OS 'tion), L. M. Isitt (Independent), D. R. Wilson (Socialist). So far no Government candidate is announced. At a meeting of the Labour Representation Committee to-night the Rev. L. M. Isitt, a candidate for the Christchurch North seat, was present, and briefly addressed the meeting, outlining his political platform. Ho answered questions, and was accorded a vote of thanks. After he left the committee discussed the question of contesting the seat, and it was unanimously decided to take no action in connection with the by-election. This means that members of the Labour Party have a free hand. The committee decided to run a candidate for the seat on the City Council rendered vacant by tiio election of Councillor J. J. Dugall as Mayor.
