SPORTING LEAGUE.
A NEW MOVEMENT. j IN THE INTEREST OF SPORT. A circular was read at the Miiiiawatu Trotting Club’s last meeting calling a meeting of representatives of all racing and trotting clubs' in the Dominion for 18th July, at Wellington, for the purpose of establishing a New Zealand Sporting League, with branches throughout the Dominion, proposed by the president of the New Zealand Trotting Association at the close of last season, and on lines similar to those of the Sporting League of England formed to resist the encroachments of various bodies who occupy themselves with the sport and recreations of the people. The circular states that the League’s main endeavours will be to influence public opinion, without regard to party politics, in the interests of sport, so as to enable the people to amuse ,them selves in future without molestation, and generally to do whatever may from time to time seem advisable for counteracting the pernicious influence of the anti-sporting party. “In view of the Parliamentary elections in November next, it is im-pAi-ative that steps should be taken without further delay in the direction of opposing any attempts to deprive citizens of what they consider rational amusements, etc., including the totalisator. If those who are in favour of the latter wish to see it retained they must do their utmost to endeavour to secure the return to Parliament of members who aro in favour of the machine.” Thoso present spoke strongly in favour of the movement, and it was decided to appoint at the next mooting a delegate (Mr Pawson-, if willing) to represent the M.T.C. at the meeting.
