FOOTBALL.
FIRST GRADE. ELTHAM v. STRATFORD. Eltham met Stratford on the A. and P. Ground yesterday. The visiting team arrived short, and Lovericlgc, Russ, Slight, and Merchant, local players, played for them. Stratford played with the wind in the first spell, and quickly piled up points, hut in tne second spell Eltuam showed up well, and held their own. Mr. W. Roch was referee. Eltham kicked off, but play was taken at once to their territory, where a save was effected by a mars. By bright work Eltham got ap towards half way, but a free kick did not improve their position much, and a force followed. Play continued in Eltham’s twenty-five. Anderson centred the ball, and Cameron get ii and raced for the goal, but lie was cleverly cellared, and the ball war sent out. Shortly afterwards Cameron raced again for; the goal, but he was smothered. An Eltham attack was stepped by Kivel! with a i icc kick. 1 ni' still stayed in the Eltham twenty-hvo. On resumption play worked neavc-i to the centre lino than it had previously, but soon after a line rar by Cameron, and Anderson scorer agpin in tlie corner, Catreroa agab,* failing with the kick. Stratford 6, Eltham 0. Play was still in tire Eltham territory. Stratford pressed hard, in rush towards the goal Boon passed tc Wood, who passed back to Cameron, who ran in without opposition. The kick at goal -was easy, and Cameron put they ball over. Stratfcrd 11, Eltham 0. On resumption play was for a change forced to Stratford’s twenty five, and remained there for some tirno. Foliar took a mark nr a gooc position, but failed to put the bah ovor. Thereafter play was in mid field for a time, but the Eitharn defence was very weak, and when Can eroir got tire ball he raced ovar v.ith out having' to pass anybody. Largest had a shot at goal but failed to score. Stratford 14, Eltham 0. Very soon afterwards Stewart got the ball and ran through from halfway. He took the kick himself am registered the major points. Stratford 19, Eltham 0. Stratford kept the upper hand, and Ryan, a now member of the team, got over. Stewart failed with th; kick, though it .was a good effort. Stratford 22, Eltham 0. Shortly afterwards Cameron goi the ball and ran through without op position, and also added the mujbi points. Stratford 27, Eltham 0. Eltham pushed play towards halfway, but again Stratford worked towards Eltham’s goal. A score was spoiled by an olf-oide pass, but Cameron soon afterwards got through i: a silly fashion. His kick at goal failed,’ though the angle was easy. Stratford 30, Eltham 0. No intermission was taken at Ink time. In a very short time Cameron touched down. Ryan failed with tin kick. Stratfcrd 33, Eltliam 0. Eltham now became a bit assertive, and pushed play towards the Stratford goal, and they had an unsuccessful shot at goal from a mark. Play was then pretty even for some time, remaining about half way. After much give-and-take play J’ctiet got the ball in a good position, .but was net properly supported, and raped to score. Shortly afterwards, while Eltham was invading, Potier got the ball and potted a nice goal. Stratford 33, Eltham 4. Eltliam continued to show up bettor, and not long after the previous kick Ryan got the ball and potted another goal.
Stratford 33, Eltham 8. Just before time was sounded Stratford passed their opponents and Cameron got over without opposition. No goal resulted. Stratford 33, Eltham 8. CLTFION (29) v. INGLEWOOD '.The above teams met at Waitara yesterday. Neither Column nor Crow"ly played for Clifton. Then Inglewood got into difficulties, and a fine passing rush resulted in Fairley touching down for Clifton. No goal resulted. Play moved up and down the field, and when half-time was called was just outside Clifton’s twenty-five. Clifton attacked strong at the opening of the second spell, but Inglewood later on carried play to Clifton s (limi - ters. George relieved with a gotd kick and soon afterwards V.Tate beat two men with a dodgy run and scored between the posts, George converting. Again Inglewood attacked, but Eggleston relieved. From a lige-ont. Eggleston secured the ball and potted a nice goal. Play went up rnd down, but Inglewood were attacking, ami Clifton were forced. Later on, V. Tate once more scored, George converting. V. Tate made a long mu, and Inglewood wore forced. From some close work Ivylo secured and scored. No goal resulted. Time was called shortly afterwards with play in Inglewood’s quarters, Mr F. Spurcllc was referee. SECOND GRADE. Star boat Tukapa by 21 to 3. Mr H. Petty was referee. THIRD GRADE. Eltham forfeited to Stratford. DAN O’BRIEN SHIELD. Tukapa and Star met yesterday at New Plymouth and tried conclusions for the Dan O’Brien Shield. After an exciting game Tukapa wore vietm r- by .5 (a converted try scored by Mynott) to 3 (a try scored by W. Whitaker). The proceeds of the match are to be handed to the widow of the late Mr James Way. A football match took place at Whangamomona on Saturday last, beta con teams representing the Public Works and the Whanga district. The game, which was hard fought Iroiii beginning to end, was won by the former by 12 points In nd. Mr Armstrong hold the whistle.

Exhibitors from ail parts have already arrived, and the abiding is already assuming a very aisy appearance.
