PALMERSTON ITEMS.
(Per Press Asociatsion.) Palmerston North, June 27. _ The Manawatu A. and P. Association received one hundred and eleven applications for its secretaryship. After three days sitting, the Finance Committee reduced the applicants to three, one each in Auckland, Christchurch and Omaru. Owing to the refusal of the Sheffield Choir, management to bring the ochcstra boro, the Holiday Association rescinded the holiday. The local Sheffield Choir executive represented by telegraph last night that failure to bring tiic orchestra would prejudicially affect the receipts, and Dr. Harriss telegraphed that the orchestra would come with the choir. The Holiday Association has now granted a half-holiday. An egg circle was formed here tonight, at a largely attended meeting of poultry men. The Manawatu Trotting Club, which has a permit to hold a meeting but has no totalisator license, has decided to hold a meeting in July on the Ashhurst course, one of those racing clubs the Racing Commission purpose closing. V!pTOR!A COLLEGE. CAPPING CEREMONY. (P*.r Press Association.) Wellington, Juno 27. The capping ceremony in connection with Victoria College took place tins afternoon, degrees being, conferred by Mr. G. Hogben, M.A., Inspector-Gen-eral of Schools, in.the absence of Sir Robert Stout, the Chancellor of the New Zealand University Senate. Speeches were delivered by His Excellency the Governor, Lord Islington, and Mr. C. Wilson, chairman of Victoria College Council. The latter appealed for £IOOO, needed for the work of the college. *
