AN ADMIRAL’S CONGRATULATION. London, June 27. Vice-Admiral Prince Louis of Battenlnirg, in a speech at the presentation of plate to the battleship Commonwealth, said:—“We of the navy take the greatest interest in the birth of the Australian branch.” The Prince said he was particularly delighted that the Commonwealth would bo one of the ships under his command. A GALA PERFORMANCE. WONDERFUL DISPLAY. (Received 28, 9.15 a.m.) London, June 27. Their* Majesties, the Royal guests, and foreign envoys, attended a gala performance at Covent Garden. Melba sang selections from Romeo; Tetra/.ini also sang. Sir Wilfrid Laurier, General Botha, Sir Joseph and Lady Ward, and Mr. and Mrs. Fisher occupied a box in Wonderland. The display of jewels, uniforms, drosses and the 100,000 limps used upon the trellis of the green gave the house the appearance of an old-fashioned garden, whereof the boxes were deeply recessed. The balcony was inscribed with the words “Australia,” “New Zealand,” and other dominions, made of pink roses. The Royal guests and Sir Joseph and Lady Ward afterwards attended the Duchess of Westminster’s ball.
