(Per Press Association.) Westport, June 21. William Nathan Mill son, aged 10, residing at Kumara, yesterday attempted to cross the Karainea River on horseback, near the mouth. A serious accident occurred in a curious fashion at tiie entrance to the Lyttelton tumid last night, when Henry Alilis, employed in the railway yard at Lyttelton, came close to losinjg Iris life. Alilis, who is an exporiehced railway hand, had boon in the habit of riding on the train from Lyttelton station to tire signal box, a few chains distant. Last night he over-ran the usual place for dropping off, and did noV. jump ti]l at .the mouth of tlio tunnel, when ho was, dashed against a buttress and fell under the wheels oi tiie train, which nearly severed his right leg and caused other injuries.
