NATIONAL DAIRY SHOW.
THE OPENING -.A'. (Per Press Associsic : «mi.j Palmerst- N.’tb. June -0 The National Dairy Show opened • to-day, in fine weather. The Governor performed'tiie opening ceremony;, and delivered an address on the agricultural industry and the value ol scientific farming. He spoke of great advance in labour-saving machinery, evidenced by the splendid exhibition at the show, and said that Avliat he had seen of the exhibits fully endorsed the statement ho had frequently heard made that the' jVlanaAvatu Slioav Avas second to none in the Dominion. Ho also, Avhile referring to tlie valuable Avork that avus being done by the different agricultural and pastoral associations, said • there should be a limit to the number of shoAvs, as too many Avmild tend to enervate tiie industry, instead of stimulating it. The attendance at the show was satisfactory. Judges of factory butter and cheese ’spoke in high terms of the quality of the exhibits, Avhich were numerically larger than at any preauous show. The exhibit ol the Agricultural Department excelled any yet made, and is an attractive feature "of the slioav. There is a splendid entry of apples for the Royal Horticultural Society's modal and special prize of £lO. This class Avas Avon by J. Cushing, of West Clive, HaAvke's Bay.. W. J. Bailsille, of Kairanga, won the special class for collection of farm roots in competition for. Sutton and Sons’ shield. F. Westlmry, Taita, Wellington-,'Won the Royal Horticultural Society’s medal for collection of vegetables, and also gained many firsts in the vegetable class, and the medal for the host collection of potatoes Avas Avon by R. Christenson, of Christchurch. Forty-nine co-operative companies and seven exporters Avcre represented at tljo annual meeting of tho National Dairy Association to-day. Fifty pounds avus voted to tho president, and £2O to each director. The question of home separation Avas discussed at some length, but it Avas finally do- ' cided to leave tbo matter over till next annual meeting. Mr. Cuddle’s suggestion re raising the standard by adopting a fourth grade and putting “choicest” on butter grading over 91, Avas approved. Jho meeting affirmed the principle of tbo suggestion, but left tbo points of the n©Av grade to bo fixed later. This afternoon tbo following directory were elected :—For Taranaki: Messrs. A. Morton (Mangorei), H. Forsvth (Eltbami, j. B. Murdoch (Joll’s). -or Auckland: A. C. Hnbi bard (Thames Valley) and T. Bassett (Northern Wairoa). It Avas resolved to provide £IOOO to cover the indenting of manures OJUj-y appliances, etc., for members. hiacJi factory to put in a prornissorv note or £lO for every 100 tons of butter, and £5 for every 100 tons of cheese.
