CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
' MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held last night. Present: Messrs J. Masters (in the chair). King, Young, James, Cargill. McMillan, and Richards (secretary). The Secretary reported that ho had seen the authorities regarding the Matau and Purangi mails, and had been informed that at present it would not be convenient to change the present system. If, however, the Chamber desired specially to press the point the postmaster at Now Plymouth said he would go over the country and see exactly how things stood.—lt was decided if. again urge on the authorities the necessity of the mails being cent via Kioro instead of via Inglewood. Mr W. P. Kirkwood urged On the 1 Chamber to unite with the ■ Borough Council in an effort to get a subsidy from the Government foi a Coronation memorial. He thought it was not right to do nothing when the subsidy was waiting to bo taken —Mr Masters thought the Borough Council would not spend a penny in the matter.—lt was decided to take no action. The Hon. George Fowlds notified that he would he in Stratford on .Juno 27th.—At the previous meeting Messrs Masters, James, Kirkwood, and Richards had been appointed tc entertain him.—lt was decided that if there was time, Mr Fowlds should bo driven by motor car round some of the district. , The Wellington Chamber of Commerce wrote, regarding the Austnu lian mail service and the distribution of the inward Suez mail, urging that Wellington should be the distributing centre for the Suez mail, therebj benefiting all parts of the Dominion. —lt was' decided “to support the Wellington Chamber. -The Commissioner of Police, under date May 27tli, wrote that the matter of making an extension to the telephone at the Police Station was under consideration.—The secretary reported that Sergeant Cullen had informed him that the desired extension to the residence had been installed. The Minister for Tourist and Health Resorts (Hon. T. Mackenzie), wrote that lie had instructed the Department's photographer to visit Taranaki to take kinematograph films il- , lustrating the dairy industry.—Received. It was decided that a deputation oi the Chamber wait on the Hori. George Fowlds in regard to the Opunake railway. - It was decided to ask the Railway Department to provide destination boards, showing where trains are bound for. Messrs F. W. Wako and L. Doherty were elected members of. the Chamber.
