VOLCANO’S SUDDEN OUTBREAK.
PILGRIM’S AWFUL FATE. Tokio, June 5. Tho animal festival at the snrino on the summit of Asama-Vania, a lolty volcano on the island of Hondo, has been attended by a great disaster. Hundreds of pilgrims had ascended tho mount, and wore going throng,: some of the ceremonies incidental to tho festival, when, with terrible suddenness, the volcano burst into a state of eruption. Tho outbreak was accompanied by a tremendous report, which was heard as far as Tokio, which is 90 miles away. hollowing tliis terrific explosion came an overwhelming shower of molten lava and ashes. ivescue parties had the greatest difficulty in making . their way to tile summit, and on arrival there they found that many lives had boon lost. Most of tho 'bodies bad been coraplctly shrivelled up by tho bet lava, while those of other victims bad had all the clothes burned off them. Jt is not yet possible to say how many perished. • . , A 810 FIRE. Now York, Juno 16. A irdUion dollar fire at St. Louis destroyed four blocks in the manufacturing section of the city. Hundreds arc thrown out of work. KING’S HORSES BOLT. EIGHT PERSONS INJURED. , London, June 16. Ajtcr the Kino* and Queen had passed tho Long Walk at Windsor, returning from Ascot, two spare horses, id charge of a Royal groom, dashed into thousands of spectators and cans l cd a panic. The groom was thrown, and one horse bolted into Windsor. Eight persons were injured. A DESTRUCTIVE WAVE. A HUNDRED KILLED. Vienna, Juno 16. Following a. thunderstorm a huge wave broke over tbo sea front at Trieste wharves, and swamped the railway. The tramlines wore 1 torn up, and eight Austrian Lloyds boats broke from their moorings. Damage to tho extent of a -million sterling is estimated. One hundred peoplo were killed. MEXICAN UNREST. ANTI-POREIG N MOVEMENT?. Mexico City, Juno 16. Reports from Vera Cruz, Tohasco, and Janisco, indicate minor insurrectionary disturbances. •The Indians in Lake Chapala district are combining in an anti-foreign movement, with a view to the expulsion of German and American farmers. THE RECIPROCITY WAR. (Received 17, 9 a.m:) Washington, Juno 16. During the reciprocity debate. Senator Nelson accused President Taft of usurping the treaty-making powers of Congress; also of having infringed tho constitution in spirit. ' Tho Reciprocity Treaty, in order to pass, ought to receive a two-thirds majority of tho Senate instead of tho ordinary vote. Tho Canadians followed President Taft regarding his presidential treaty making powers; also with respect to the free-listing of Canadian agricultural implements.
