SALARIES PAID TO TEACHERS
RADICAL UPGRADING URGED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 10. The New Zealand Educational Institute’s annual conference today expressed the view that unless. a radical upgrading of teachers salaries takes place in order to attract the right type of entrant, no educational advance is possible. The executive was instructed to proceed with all its energy with the campaign to improve salaries. A comparison was drawn between the salaries paid to secondary school teachers and thosfe to primary school teachers, whereas it was considered that there should be no difference, or, if any, it should be rather in favour of those teaching young children. Emphasis was also laid on the difficult financial position in which a male married teacher found himself. CHILDREN’S PERIODICALS
A remit from Northern Wairoa asked that the institute urge the raising of speech, social and ethical standards as they are represented in children’s periodicals. The debate showed differences of opinion, but the motion was declared carried on the voices. Calls for a division were not granted. , Officers were elected as follows: President, Mr A. Hanna (Dunedin); vice-president, Mr W. J. Cartwright (Christchurch); treasurer, Mr J. H. S. Robertson (Wellington); executive, Mr M. S. Pitkowsky, Miss M. F; Gallagher, Messrs O. A. Banner and M. Riske, Miss N. J. Duncan (all of Wellington), Mr G. Mitchell (Canterbury), Dr W. Boraman (Southland), Mr J. Menzies (Thames), Miss V. Curtis (Taranaki) and Mr D. Jillett (Ohakune).
