AMERICAN COLLIER SUNK
(Rec. 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, May 9. The Navy Department announced that an enemy submarine torpedoed and sank an American collier of 7000 tons off the Rhode Island coast on May 5. Twelve members of the crew are missing, believed dead. Three Allied ships in the vicinity rescued 34 survivors. The collier’s owners said the submarine was reported to have been sunk by naval action after the collier went down.
