SENTENCE PASSED ON BOOKMAKER
Parliament Petitioned For Reduction (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 28. A petition praying that the sentence of 12 months’ imprisonment with hard labour passed on Arthur Leonard Albertson, of Christchurch, on a charge of carrying on business as a bookmaker should be reviewed and reduced was presented to the House of Representatives today by Miss M. B. Howard (Lab., Christchurch East). The petition is signed by A. Buck and 4134 others.
The petition says that the jury which found Albertson guilty on November 2 added a rider to its verdict that in the opinion of the jurymen the Gaming Act should be amended. In the opinion of the petitioners the sentence passed by Mr Justice Northcroft on November 6 was “harsh and excessive and out of proportion to the gravity of the offence.”
The signatories include a large number of Wellington, Hawke’s Bay, Manawatu, Rangitikei and West Coast residents, with a few signatures from as far south as Dunedin and Invercargill.
