BUILDING ACTIVITY IN CITY

The value of building permits issued in the city last month showed a sharp increase from £1540 in August to £16,489. The reason for the increased value of the permits was the greater number of permits issued for alterations to business premises. The value for such permits in September of last year was £1689/5/-. Last month the value was £14,915/8/-. Following are the figures for last month:—

old gelding by Salmagundi from Coalpit by Cockpit from Gold Bound, dam of Gold Pit, who was raced in the same Interests. Gunga Din was bred by his owners, and this was his first win. He ran second in his only race as a two-year-old, and was unplaced in both his starts last season. It was after his race in the Cashmere Plate at the Grand National meeting in 1941 that he contracted some internal trouble, and it was only after long treatment that he recovered. However, he was unable to race for the remainder of the season, and did not reappear until the last Christchurch Hunt meeting. Racing in Australia The Australian Jockey Club, on its own initiative, has decided to confine horses eligible to race in the Sydney area to six years old or under. This restriction will operate during the new 1942-43 season and will debar all racehorses classed as “aged.” It will serve to curtail the fields at New South Wales racing fixtures and make way for youthful thoroughbreds reaching training age, writes Sir Modred. It may not be generally known that a large number of blood horses are annually bred in New South Wales, where several of the world’s leading studs are situated.
