The importance of preventing Dakar falling into enemy hands has again come into prominence. Its position at the point where America comes closest to Africa has been enhanced by the virtual closing of the Mediterranean, causing the Allies to use the Cape route as their main supply line to Egypt, the Persian Gulf, India and Australia. As the map shows, Dakar also stands close to the starting points of the new overland supply routes to the Middle East.
