ESCAPE OF BORSTAL INMATES

Term Of Detention Extended A sentence of two years’ additional detention was Imposed on Thomas Paul Angell, aged 17, a Maori, and Peter Lawrence Samson, aged 18, by Mr R. C. Abernethy. S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday on charges of escaping from the Borstal Institution on Monday of last week. Samson was remanded until October 28 on a charge of assaulting George Steele, a warder, so as to cause bodily harm. Both pleaded guilty and elected to be dealt with summarily on charges of escaping and converting to tneir use a motor-car valued at £l5O, the property of John H. Tuinbull, and a motor-car valued at £240, the property of Thomas Shiels. .J Senior Detective R. Thompson said Samsom had by a trick severely assaulted Steele, secured the warder’s keys and released Angell. They escaped from the institution and took bicycles. They took the first motor-car at Waiklwi and abandoned it at Clyde street. They then stole a second car and were arrested later at Mataura. “It was a pre-arranged escape started by Samson with the consent and connivance later of Angell." the senior detective said. “I consider the case deserves the utmost punishment the Court can give. Neither accused had anything to say. The Magistrate said the history of both accused was not good. They must expect to receive extra punishment and it would depend on them whether any of the period was remitted. On the charge of escaping they were ordered to be detained for an extra two years and on the other charges they were convicted and discharged.
