UNSETTLED WEATHER IN SEPTEMBER

Poor Sunshine Records A fair amount of unsettled weather was experienced in Invercargill during September, but the rainfall was below the average for the city. The sunshine records were not as good as in August, although the days lengthened appreciably in September. . The promise of an early spring proviaea by the fine conditions in August was scarcely realized last month. There were s ® cold snaps, the one which reached ns greatest intensity last Friday with an unseasonable fall of snow being one oi uie worst of the year. For a month when growth usually begins the soil remained cold. There was little Intense cold, but on a number of nights the grass temperature dropped below freezing point, altnougn practically no frosts of more than tnree degrees occurred. The rainfall for the month was 2.85 mcnes. which is slightly below the average tor September In Invercargill. The heaviest tail was .58 of an inch last Friday and the rest of the rainfall was spread fairly evenly over the month. In August 3.56 inches fell. The sunshine figures were not impressive, the total for the month being 118.2 hours, an average of slightly less than four hours a day This was poor for a montn in which the solstice occurred and was actually 10 hours less than the total wr A Winds were variable in September. Except for a few days early in the month the only wind from a southerly quarter was during the stormy period last week. An unusual amount of wind from a northerly quarter was noted, but it frequently turned to me prevailing westerly.
