CONCERT BY NURSES
Bright Entertainment An entertainment which showed that the talents of the nursing staff of the Kew Hospital are not confined to the care of the sick was given in the Civic Theatre last night in aid of the sick and wounded fund. The theatre was packed and the entertainment was bright and varied. The appearance of many nurses in their smart uniforms on the stage in choral items and in a spectacular cavalcade of nursing was welcomed with enthusiasm. It was announced during the evening that it was expected that the concert would produce £l5O. The chairman of the Metropolitan Patriotic Committee (Mr P. L. Hodge) expressed his appreciation to the nurses for their magnificent help to the cause, and the acting medical superintendent of the hospital (Dr J. Ramsay) thanked those who had assisted in the effort. The orchestra of the Invercargill Orphans’ Club, conducted by Mr F. Lange, played the opening selections and the nurses’ choir, conducted by Mr Paul Wesney, contributed two series of sweetly sung choral items. Nurse B. Macfie danced a hornpipe and then the nurses demonstrated their “keep fit” exercises. A vocal sextet, consisting of Sisters E. Clemens and E. Trotter and Nurses M. Kennedy, A. Murphy, D. Donnelly and S. Dunbar, was deservedly popular. Sister Clemens and Nurse Kennedy sang vocal duets and Nurse Dunbar was the vocalist in a gracefully danced Saraband. Two one-act plays produced by Misses Cran and Manson were presented and caused much amusement. The plays and performers were: —“Five Birds in a Cage,” Nurses L. Stewart, K. McCormick. J. George, M. Boyce and L. Morrison, and “In Waltz Time,” Nurses J. Collins, L. Morrison, B. Murray, L. Kibblewhite, R. Orr, E. Drake, E. Samson and M. Cooney. The matron (Miss D. I. Buchanan) was the narrator in a cavalcade of nursing extending from the Greek goddess of nursing to the modern New Zealand nursing sister with the forces. The stage manager was Mr A. Sutherland and the house manager Mr E. E. Boyd.
