CARRIERS’ STAND TO BE CLOSED

The carriers’ stand in Leven street, which has been in use for the past 20 years, is to cease to be used as such. For several years the stand and the facilities connected with it were used by 10 to 15 carriers, but the evolution of motor transport and the absorption of individual carriers by Anns which ply for hire from their own premises has gradually reduced the number, so that today only two carriers, both of whom have been on the stand since its inauguration, now use it. These facts were mentioned by the city traffic inspector, Mr E. Stopford, in a report presented to the City Council at its meeting last night. Mr Stopford said that the fees paid by the two remaining carriers were not sufficient to pay the telephone rental. Cr A. Scott, .chairman of the Works Committee, moved that the stand should be closed. He said that the two remaining carriers had made other arrangements. The motion was carried.
