TREES ON ROAD TO BEACH

Tree planting has been carried out along both sides of the road leading from the Oreti river to the beach, and it is expected that in course of time this will give an avenue effect along this highway. The trees planted are 200 cabbage trees, 200 pinus insignis and 500 Lombardy poplars. These facts were reported to the City Council at its meeting last night by the officer in charge of the city’s reserves, Mi- W. Stapleton. The Reserves Committee reported that the success of the scheme would depend on the owner pt the flax-cutting rights at Sandy Point Domain refraining from cutting flax for a distance of two and a-half chains on each side of the road. The chairman of the committee, Cr J. Pickard, and Mr Stapleton had been empowered to make arrangements with the lessee accordingly. The committee also reported that it had interviewed Mr Fosbender about the possibility of acquiring his area of bush adjoining the Sandy Point Domain, but because of the price required it was not considered that any action should be taken at present. Mr Fosbender had stated that at the proper season he would undertake planting with a view to preventing sand drift. The committee recommended that the engineer report on the matter in 12 months’ tlm* The recommendation was approved. (
