SECOND SOUTHLAND REGIMENT

Not Approved By Army The suggestion made by the Southland Progress League and supported by the Invercargill City Council that a second Southland Regiment should be formed to absorb Southland men now serving in other provincial regiments has not met with the approval of the Army authorities. In a letter received by the City Council at its meeting last night the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, stated that the suggestion had been given careful consideration, but the existing man-power position was such that it was becoming increasingly difficult to maintain units of the territorial force at full strength, and it was therefore deemed inadvisable to form any new units in the meantime.
