NO NAZI PROGRESS AT STALINGRAD
RUSSIAN GARRISON NOW WELL-ENTRENCHED (United Press Association— Telegraph Copyright) (Rec. 11.40 p.m.) LONDON, September 25. In spite of furious and incessant attacks the German forces have failed to make progress in. the streets of Stalingrad. Outside the city the Russians are holding their hard-won gains against determined German counter-attacks. In one big battle in the streets of Stalingrad a German column fought its way through ruined houses until it was behind the Russian line of defence. A Russian group was hurriedly formed for a counter-attack and after wild fighting the Germans were thrown back to their , starting-point. The German command is making every effort to capture an important thoroughfare which runs through Stalingrad to the Volga, but so far, it has been unsuccessful. The city’s defenders are now wellentrenched with their flanks protected. North-west of Stalingrad more progress has been made by Marshal Semion Timoshenko’s troops, who have taken a good number of prisoners. The Germans have suffered heavy material losses in resisting this Russian counter-attack. At Mozdok a German attempt to drive a wedge in the Russian defences failed. A German drive against Tuapse, the important Black Sea port, has met with stubborn resistance and has failed to make headway.
