LIME POSITION SERIOUS
The seriousness of the lime position in Southland was stressed at a meeting of the Gore Council of Primary Production yesterday. It was stated that there were adequate supplies of lime, but that the trouble was in obtaining labour for the lime works. It was decided that the matter be referred to the Hon. W. J. Polson, Minister of Primary Production for War Purposes, at a conference at Dunedin last night. In giving a report on the position, Mr S. D. Blomfield said that together with Messrs H. Smith and W. G. Mac Kay he had attended a representative meeting of all lime companies and councils south of Dunedin which was held at Gore. It had been unanimously decided that all lime orders should be cancelled as from September 12, and that a fresh form be filled in by all users of lime. One ton would be allowed for sowing out grass and half a ton for other crops, and some scheme was to be worked out for the period after Christmas. There was any amount of lime available, but the whole trouble was one of labour, Mr Blomfield stated. A statement that one of the biggest problems facing the farmers at the present time was the question of obtaining shearers was made by Mr Mac Kay. There was no possible chance of having the sheep shorn in Eastern Southland unless men were released, he said. It was decided that this matter also should be taken up with Mr Polson. Messrs Smith, Mac Kay and S. Sim were appointed delegates to meet Mr Polson at Dunedin. PERSONAL.— Mr Milton Green, of Gore, was appointed to the position of part-time secretary of the Gore Council of Primary Production at a meeting of the council yesterday.
