COLOGNE, CITY OF DESOLATION
(Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, June 6. Photographic reconnaissance of Cologne after the 1000-bomber raid was hampered, says the Air Ministry news service, by the continuing pall of cloud and smoke, but later photographs have now been secured showing the extent of the destruction. No part of the city has escaped and heavily damaged areas total some 5000 acres. There are six major areas if devastation in the old city. On the west bank of the river, in the Enfeld district, a large industrial area has been badly damaged. On the east bank of the river, at Koln, the Deutz Exhibition Hall has been destroyed. A close inspection of the photographs reveals large areas where damage has been particularly severe. Especially pronounced is the devastation around the main station and the Nippes railway works where the main shop has been gutted, roofs ripped off and walls shattered. Fire has completed what high explosives began.
