BEATING THE U-BOAT
FEWER SINKINGS COUNTER MEASURES BY U.S. NAVY (Rec. 10 p.m.) NEW YORK, June 6. Naval officials of the eastern sea frontier, stretching from Canada to Jacksonville, Florida, revealed that the submarine menace in the Atlantic between those points has been steadily decreasing. Actual losses suffered by the United Nations were slightly over half of one per cent Of a total of 2500 ships sailing from one eastern port only 16 were sunk in coastal waters. One official asserted: “We have been getting help from England, including corvettes and fishing trawlers. The situation will continue to improve with the addition of other protective boats.” It is reported from Miami, Florida, that Rear-Admiral Kauffman, new commander of the Gulf Sea frontier, expressed the opinion that there was reason to be encouraged about the Navy’s anti-submarine campaign. "The only way to conquer the submarine menace is to sink the submarines,” he said. “I have instructed all our forces that the sinking of submarines is their primary mission.”
