BURNSIDE STOCK SALE

IMPROVED MARKET FOR OX BEEF

(P.A.) DUNEDIN, January 28. A smaller entry in the beef section resulted in an improved sale at the Bumside market. This was most noticeable in prime and prime to medium ox classes, while ordinary and light did not show this improved value. Cows and heifers, which were in oversupply, met with a rather dragging sale. Fat lambs sold freely, but were barely up to last week’s prices. Baconers were firm, but porkers Were erratic and could be quoted easier. Fat Cattle—The entry totalled 275 head compared with 370 last week. On the average ox beef could be quoted at 10/- improvement. Extra prime bullocks realized to £lB/7/6, prime £l5/2/6 to £l6/12/6, medium £ll/12/6 to £l2/17/6, light £B/17/6 to £lO/12/6; extra prime cows and heifers to £lO 2/6, prime £6/17/6 to £B, medium £5 to £6/2/6, light from £3/15/-. Store Cattle—There was a small entry in this class compared with a moderate entry last week. One and a-half and two-year-old steers realized from £5 15/- to £B/12/6. An odd pen of fresh cows met with a fair demand and sold from £2/10/- to £2/17/6, while poor grades sold from £l/5/- to £l/15/-. For vealers again the entry was fair and prices for all classes firm. A pen of good quality suckers made from £3/13/- to £4/17/6, while medium sorts could be quoted from £2 7/- to £2/14/-. Store Lambs.—There was again an exceptionally heavy entry of store lambs totalling 11,709 head, but the quality was scarcely up to last week’s exceptionally high standard, backward quality being more numerous.
