COST OF PRECAUTIONS WORK

PROPORTION OF STATE SUBSIDY

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, January 24. Heavy expenditure is being faced by the E.P.S. organization in Wellington and other large centres, but beyond the intimation about the cost of airraid shelters advice of Government intentions in the way of assistance is still awaited according to a statement made by the Mayor of Wellington, Mr T. C. A. Hislop. He said in connection with the provision of air-raid Shelters, that the Government has decided to subsidize to the extent of 75 per cent This, however, was only part of the expenditure and in principle there was no reason why 75 per cent, of all E.P.S. expenditure should not be paid by the Government from the public purse. This recommendation, said Mr Hislop,' was in fact made by the Mayoral conference in Wellington, but it was not yet known whether it was going to be adopted.
