PANTOMIME AGAIN
“ALADDIN” NEXT MONTH
It is close on 10 years since a J. C. Williamson pantomime was previously staged in New Zealand, and the announcement that “Aladdin,” or the Wonderful Lamp, will be produced in the Civic Theatre on Monday, February 9, and the two following evenings, with matinees on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 10 and 11 will doubtless create much interest. It is claimed that J. C. Williamson’s latest pantomime is by far their best and most spectacular production yet seen in New Zealand, and its presentation here will no doubt revive in the older generation of theatregoers happy memories of the days when they were thrilled and delighted by “Mother Gdose,” “The Sleeping Beauty,” “The Forty Thieves” and other notable productions. For the production of “Aladdin” the management has been fortunate in securing a splendid company of comedians, pantomimists, singers, dancers, acrobats and specialty artists, headed by the Great Levante, who will appear as Abanazar, the wicked magician, a role he portrayed successfully in the London production of “Aladdin.” The cast also includes the dashing young English “principal boy,” Miss Doris Whimp, who takes the part of Aladdin, Ed. Edwards, a young and talented London comedian who will appear as Widow Twankey, Esme Levante, Ursula Irving, Ronnie Shand, George Corelli, Kathleen Ferris, Joe Valli, Lawrie Long, Spiro. The box plans will be opened at Begg’s on Thursday, February 5.
