(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 23. “The question of the employment of the Home Guard for patrol work and coast watching is being considered,” said the Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. The Minister was replying to an inquiry on the possibility of men of the Christchurch battalions of the Home Guard doing coastal defence duty after the completion of certain essential defence work, which they will start on Sunday. Mr Jones said that a certain - amount of patrol work was already being done at the week-ends, and in Wellington members of the .Home Guard had been attached to the fortress troops for this duty. The Government was looking into the question ,_at the present time to see if more Of the Home Guard could be employed on this work, but he was unable to say how far it had progressed. “If we give them work of that nature they will definitely be armed and equipped for it,” said Mr Jones in reply to another question. He added that the Home Guard was a voluntary organization, and there was no compulsion now as far as it was concerned. ' ’ ' ' '- "
