WALLACE COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Wallace County Council was attended by the following councillors: Messrs A. Roy (chairman), E. K. Sim, B. C. Horrell, D. D. Macdonald, H. G. Pinckney, D. Teviotdale and W. B. Hopcroft. At a special meeting Saturday was fixed as the statutory half-holiday in the Wallace County. Mr W. G. Pearce, the Main Highways Board’s representative on No. 18 District Highways Council, wrote stating that advice had been received from the chairman of the Main Highways Board that it had been agreed to provide a £3 for £1 subsidy on the cost of sealing a 10-chain length of the Riverton-Otautau main highway in front of the Fairfax dairy factory, estimated at £320. The board desired that the work be put in hand at an early date, and it was suggested that the 10-chain/ portion to be sealed be reshaped and widened by grader work. The engineer (Mr J. G. C. Baker) suggested that under present conditions the Highways Board be asked if the work could' not be : done without reconditioning the road, and this course was agreed to. The engineer was also authorized to communicate with the board about the sealing of the road at the Tuatapere factory. A resolution was carried that consideration of the erection of new offices be postponed until normal conditions prevailed. . It was decided to supply a hospital kit for the E.P.S. at the Rocks at a cost not to exceed £5. It was resolved to impose a penalty of 10 per cent, on all rates remaining unpaid on March 5. Cr Horrell moved that the following works be authorized for expenditure in Orepuki riding: Maintenance gravelling, Happy Valley road, £100; Government grant, Mclnerney road, £2 for £l, £26. A. Hopcroft moved that the following amount be voted for expenditure in Pourakino riding: Government grant, Longwood road, £360, £3 for £l, £120; additional £56; total £176. Cr Speight moved that the following amount be voted for expenditure in Wairaki riding: Government grant, Grassy Creek Bridge (Clifden-Mana-pouri road), £ for £ (Russell’s bridge), £150; additional, £72; total, £222. ENGINEER’S REPORT The engineer reported that since the last meeting on November 26 the weather had been continuously changeable, dull and showery, but road surfaces had been unaffected. The Pourakino bridge and approaches (except for the wing fences) were now completed. With reference to Messrs A. R. and N. B. Sim’s application for a new road at Piko Piko, it was difficult these .times to get a firm quote for the cost of a survey, but about £47 was about the figure for this part of the work. On December 15 last petrol allowances throughout the Dominion were cut, the council’s allocation being reduced by one-third. He had made a tentative reallocation among the ridings of the new reduced quantity. It would be an improvement as far as the amount of petrol now available for a riding was concerned if the second motor-grader in the Wairio riding could be dispensed with or perhaps transferred to the Wairaki riding, allowing the present Wairaki riding grader to be scrapped. The two wash-outs at the upper Mararoa bridge on the BurwoodMavora road mentioned in the report of November 26 had now been attended to and the approach affected reinstated. The contract for the cleaning of the ditch through the Oraka township was let since last meeting and the work was just about completed. Tenders had been called for metalling part of Mclnerney road,. Waihoaka, and the only tender received was now before the council. Authority to spend had now been received for the Government grant work on Longwood road, and the work would be advertised immediately. The plans arid specifications for Russell’s bridge, Grassy Creek road, had been approved and the work would be gone on with as soon as authority was received.
