FAMILY’S SCHOLASTIC RECORD

The report published yesterday about the distinction gained by a Southland family by two of its members winning university national scholarships equals the record of the Aitken family, of Dunedin. Two brothers, Dr A. C. Aitken, F.R.S., Ph.D„ and the late Mr H. A. Aitken, M.Sc., F.1.C., both won these scholarships and carried on to gain high reputations in the scholastic world. Dr Aitken is now lecturer in actual sciences at Edinburgh University, and is recognized as one of the world’s leading mathematicians. During the Great War he gained a commission on the field in France. The late Mr H. A. Aitken gained prominence for his work in cancer research. Mr L. M. Aitken, of the sub-editorial staff of The Press, Christchurch, is a brother and Mrs A. V. Keast, Invercargill, is a sister.
