BAN ON TELEPHONE CONNECTIONS
NECESSARY PRECAUTION (P.A.) WELLINGTON, January 23. The Postmaster-General, the Hon. P. C. Webb, said tonight that there seemed to be an impression in some quarters that the recent restriction on new telephone connections was the outcome of a mere red tape decision rather than a very necessary war-time precaution. Mr Webb said the quantity of telephone equipment in the Dominion was not large, and to ensure that stocks would be available for the armed forces in the event of an attack it became necessary to close down completely in the meantime on all new connections not essential to the State in the present emergency. - Otherwise the Government would be displaying a grave lack of sense of responsibility to the people of New Zealand. Mr Webb added that a large quantity of telephone equipment and material was on order, but manufacturing and shipping difficulties made its arrival irregular. However, the present restrictions would be relaxed when warranted.
