VENUE OF DUNEDIN CUP MEETING WINGATUI MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE Although the committee of the Dunedin Jockey Club has not yet officially discussed the military situation in ielation to its cup meeting next month, some preliminary representations have been made to the Racing Conference and the Minister of Internal Affairs to ascertain whether a change of venue and dates will be possible. There is a general belief in Dunedin that the Wingatui course will not be available, and subject to the club being able to arrange a satisfactory transport service the Dunedin Cup meeting may be held at Waikouaiti. It is considered very unlikely that Wingatui will be available. The meeting will be held on successive Saturdays. Lord Midas

Lord Midas could not return north after the Dunedin Christmas meeting as he contracted a poisoned leg. He was left with G. McKay at Wingatui and though his near foreleg is still heavily bandaged he is being given slow work. Dark Olga

Dark Olga has been taken up again by H. Anderton. She has been away from the tracks since racing at the New Zealand Cup meeting, but she will not require a great deal of work to get her ready for racing again. Only Meeting

The Wellington Racing Club’s meeting is the only race meeting in New Zealand on Saturday.

Haughty Winner For Sale. Haughty Winner, who has won 13 "races and £4745 in stakes, is for sale as a stallion.

Compeer And Moneybird z As a final sprint before leaving Wingatui for Trentham, Compeer and Moneybird were galloped three furlongs. The former had to be kept up to his work at the finish, but he responded well and there was little between them. Their trainer, D. J. McDonald, has been" granted leave till Monday and will travel across to Wellington tonight with the horses. Depending on weights and whether they are available, either P. Spratt or L. Hare will probably do the riding. Tuapeka Meeting The Tuapeka Jockey Club has decided to abandon its Easter meeting this season. More About Treasurer Treasurer, who lost condition on the trip south, has built up nicely as the result of an easy time, and he is on the way back to good form, states a Christchurch writer. At the August meeting at Addington in 1925 M. Holmes scored his first win in saddle on Bonny Logan in the Lightning Handicap, when she recorded 2min 14 l-ssec for a mile. Later in the season he rode the same mare to win the Telegraph Handicap at Addington in 2min 9 4-ssec, at that time a saddle record for New Zealand. His last ride was on Gold Bar, when the Grattan Loyal pacer won in 2min 3 2-ssec, another record. With the opportunities presented nowadays, states The Press, it is not given to many horsemen to ride more than one horse to a record. Auckland Trots

As two Saturdays are not available, the February meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club will be confined to one day, February 14. A revision of dates for later meetings at Epsom has become necessary, and the following have been applied for: May 23 and 30, June 27 and July 7. The Great Northern Trotting Derby will be run next month as originally arranged, but the Great Northern Trotting Stakes, for two-year-olds, will be run on one day of the May meeting. ■ Rail Traffic To Races

The effect of the petrol restrictions was reflected in the large numbers travelling to Washdyke by train on Saturday for the summer meeting of the Timaru Trotting Club. Normally, on race days, the department caters for about 300 passengers, but on Saturday the number reached 1400. This meant a busy day for the staff, which, expected an increase in traffic, although not to such an extent.

Wellington Cup Winners In the table of Wellington Cup winners a mare called Cynisca takes pride of place in accounting for the race in three successive years, 1890, 1891 and 1892. She was a daughter of the famous imported French horse Apremont, whose blood is prominent in many New Zealand pedigrees of today. It is on record that one of his sons, perhaps the best two-year-old of his year, in Wakawatea, won a hurdle race in Sydney at the age of 14 years. Another son called Zeehan was winning sprint races in Southland when 10 or 12 years of age. But these were only two of Apremont’s many descendants noted for powers of endurance. Vivid Night

Vivid Night, winner of the first division of the Trentham Highweight Handicap at the Wellington meeting is a four-year-old gelding who may win many races, writes Sir Modred. Nightly, his sire, was by Night Raid (sire of Phar Lap and Nightmarch) from Miss Muriel, a mare of Soult, Lucullus, Musket and Yattendon' strains. In maternal line Vivid Night was from Vivette, by Hunting Song from Grey Eyes, by Greyspear (son of Spearmint) from Bella Donna, by Vasco from Belle Clair, a good racing proposition of Musket, Traducer and Ravensworth sires’ blood, and from the great taproot grand-dam of Mermaid, imported.
