Mr J. Philp, who has been appointed superintendent of the Invercargill Fire Brigade, will assume his duties next Monday. Mr Philp was previously deputy-superintendent of the Wellington Fire Brigade. Best wishes for the speedy recovery of the Mayor (Mr J. R. Martin), who is ill, was expressed by councillors at a meeting of the Invercargill City Council last night. The Rev. Father H. A. Lister, S.M., of Napier, who has been visiting his mother, Mrs M. J. Lister, Ettrick street, left by the midday express yesterday on his return journey.

Advice has been received by cablegram by Mr and Mrs W. Tait, of Greenhills, that their son, Douglas Haig Tait, has been granted a commission of sublieutenant in the Fleet Air Arm. SubLieutenant Tait left New Zealand in January of last year to continue his studies at a naval college in England. Mr James Anderson, who, after representing The Southland Daily News on the Southland Master Printers’ Association for the past 20 years, has now retired, was met by members of the association recently. Mr M. Fenton president of the association, presided. Mr Anderson was presented with a barometer by his fellow members and was elected a life member of the association.

The Senate of the University of New Zealand has conferred the honorary degree of doctor of science on Sir William Benham, emeritus professor of zoology at the University of Otago, for his contributions to science.—P.A. The death of Mr R. J. Bennell was referred to at a meeting of the Dunedin Returned Services Association. It was stated that he was a life member of the association, and was a member of the committee when funds were raised for the building of the club rooms. After being registrar of the Social Security Department at Auckland for nearly three years, Mr Charles Dunn is being transferred to Wellington next month as assistant director of the Social Security Department. Mr A. E. T. Williams, chief clerk of the department in Wellington, succeeds him in Auckland.—P.A.
