PERSONAL

The Hon. Adam Hamilton, a member of the War Cabinet, will leave this morning for Wellington. The Mayor, Mr J. R. Martin, who is undergoing treatment in Park hospital, was reported last evening to be comfortable and progressing satisfactorily. Mr W. F. Sturman, town clerk, resumed duty yesterday after his annual leave.

Sir Joseph Ward, of Christchurch, has been appointed County Scout Commissioner in succession to Commissioner F. Mclvor, who has gone into military camp. This announcement was made last night by Mr Hector Christie, Dominion Commissioner of Boy Scouts. —P.A.

The Very Rev. Monsignor Howard and the Rev. Fathers J. Murphy, J. Sexton (Invercargill), J. Fenton'/Wreys Bush) and P. J. O’Neill (Winton) were passengers by the midday express yesterday for Mosgiel. They will attend a retreat for priests of the diocese which begins at Holy Cross College this evening and continues until Friday. They will return south on Friday. Mr E. A. Richmond, of the Mataura Post Office, is acting postmaster at Woodlands while Mr C. J. Lyall is undergoing territorial training. Mr and Mrs J. S. Corbet, Mataura, have received cabled advice that their son, Sergeant-Pilot Guy Corbet, has been granted a commission with the rank of pilot officer while on active service. After doing his preliminary training with the Royal New Zealand Air Force, Pilot Officer Corbet proceeded to Canada early last year and gained his “wings.” On his arrival in Britain he was attached as a night fighter pilot to a squadron flying Hurricanes.

Mr M. Campbell, who is leaving Gore for Invercargill, was entertained by members of the Hokonui Bowling Club, Gore, at a social evening held in the club’s pavilion. A short toast list was honoured and during the evening the president (Mr W. Tretheway) made a presentation to Mr Campbell on behalf of the club members. Several other members spoke and Mr Campbell replied.
