ASSAULT ON YOUNG WOMAN
SOLDIER SENT TO PRISON (P.A.) AUCKLAND, November 5. For an assault on a young woman while she was walking through the Windsor reserve at Devonport early on Thursday morning, John Henry Standen, aged 24, a labourer and a soldier now in the Narrow Neck camp, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour in the Police Court today. He pleaded guilty. The police asked the Magistrate to treat it as an aggravated assault and said the complainant travelled from the city by the 1.30 a.m. launch on which Standen was also a passenger and he kept staring at the young woman. While she was walking through the reserve Standen approached from behind, caught her by the arm, knocked her down and fell on top of her. When she screamed he ran away and was found by two soldiers on a seat evidently trying to hide. He was handed over to the police and said he did not know why he did it.
A defence officer told the Magistrate that Standen had been on overseas service and had mostly been in and out of hospitals. There was nothing against him for his behaviour and discipline in camp.
