LUMSDEN

AIRMAN HONOURED The R.S.A. Hall was crowded for the social held in honour of Leading Aircraftman W. Trainor. The guest of honour is well known in the district, having been on the staff of the local Post Office for a number of years. The chairman, Mr P. O’Callaghan, in making a presentation, conveyed the best wishes of the committee to Leading Aircraftman Trainor, who was the first airman from the district. Messrs A. Heath (chairman of the Town Board), Finnerty (R.S.A.), J. White and the Rev. B. O. Plumb also spoke. TUG O’ WAR CONTEST The tug o’ war contest conducted by the Lumsden Patriotic Committee was very well patronized and the competition was keen. Produce stalls, side shows and tea rooms ail assisted to raise about £5O for the patriotic funds. Competition winners were: Box of chocolates, Mr F. C. Lansdell; mystery parcel No. 1, Mr J. Domigan; mystery parcel No. 2, Mr C. Rodgers; china dog, Mr J. Varcoe; cake, Mr R. Hazlett. The lightweight competition resulted in a win for the Castlerock No. 1 team. The results were:—Castlerock No. 1 beat Five Rivers; Five Rivers beat Castlerock No. 2; Castlerock No. 2 lost to Lumsden; Castlerock No. 1 beat Lumsden; Lumsden beat Five Rivers; Castlerock No. 1 beat Lumsden. The heavyweight competition resulted in a win for Redan. Results:—Redan beat Castlerock; Redan beat Five Rivers. Both the winning teams handed the prize money back to help swell the total for patriotic funds. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY The Lumsden Horticultural Society has decided to hold the Spring show on October 11. A patriotic produce stall is to be arranged. Mr F. G. Hall-Jones (Invercargill) was appointed to judge the cut flower section and Mrs J. R. Smith the produce. FLAG 500 A flag 500 afternoon was held by the Lumsden sub-branch of the Red Cross Society. The winners were Mesdames Upchurch, Nelson and L. Bell.
