BRITISH PLANES ATTACK BERLIN
MANY FIRES STARTED (8.0.W.) RUGBY, September 21. An Air Ministry communique states: “Aircraft of the Bomber Command last night in bad weather attacked objectives in Frankfurt, Berlin and other places in north-west Germany. Many fires were started in Frankfurt and Berlin. Other aircraft attacked the docks at Ostend with good results. Four of our planes are missing.” The Royal Air Force carried out another series of almost non-stop raids on the other side of the Channel this afternoon. Waves of aircraft passed over the Kent coast at several points. Blenheims of the Bomber- Command strongly escorted by fighters attacked the power station at Gosnay near Bethune on Sunday afternoon. Bombs were seen to hit the target and fires were left burning. The fighter escort had many combats with enemy fighters and it is known that 19 enemy planes were destroyed. Twelve British fighters were lost, but the pilots of two were rescued from the sea. No bombers were lost. DAMAGE TO FISH OIL FACTORY (Rec. 11.50 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 22. It is learned from Stockholm that the Royal Air Force most extensively damaged the Floro fish oil factory on Saturday. An important part was destroyed by fire and cannot be repaired. AIRCRAFT LOSSES (8.0.W.) RUGBY, September 21. While the continued British day and night offensive against Germany and the occupied territory naturally entails losses far outweighed by the value of the results obtained, the week’s comparative figures to dawn today continue to demonstrate the ascendancy of the Royal Air Force.
