SWORDS CLUB HOLDS SOCIAL EVENING

Fencing bouts and sword displays were prominent features on the pro-i gramme of a social evening held by the Invercargill Swords Club at the Y.M.C.A. rooms. Among those present was the Deputy-Mayor, Mr A. Wachner, who is patron of the club. The president of the club, SergeantMajor H. Sutton, introduced the contestants and the grand salute was performed by Messrs Ross Mitchell and Roger Black. The bouts were: Fencing, Misses H. Martin and M. Elliotte, Messrs I. Barnett and Black, Miss Z. Smith (Auckland Club) and Mr R. Thom; epee and Italian sabre duels, Messrs H. and A. Sutton. SergeantMajor Sutton performed the “Napier trick.” With a sabre sharp enough to cut paper in the air he halved an apple held on the hand of a woman member of the club without touching her hand.
