LAWN TENNIS
OFFICIAL OPENING AT RUGBY PARK The 1941 tennis season opened in Invercargill on Saturday in fine but windy weather. Rugby Park was the only club to hold an official opening, but players were to be seen limbering up on most of the city courts. About 30 members were present at the Rugby Park courts for the opening. The president of the club, Mr A. W. Jones, declared the season open and the first ball was hit over the net by the club captains, Miss I. Morton and D. Checketts. A sealed number tournament was played and resulted in some interesting matches. The winners were Miss F. Orr and A. Harvey. WAIKIWI CLUB The annual meeting of the Waikiwi Tennis Club was presided over by Mr F. Woodfield. The report stated that the past season had been disappointing because of a decline in membership but the financial position was still good. The balance-sheet showed a small credit and no outstanding liabilities. The election of officers resulted:— Patron, Sir Robert Anderson; president, Mr F. Woodfield; vice-presidents, the Rev. Father McGettigan, Messrs C. Hawes, C. F. Myers, C. Maltby, A. Marshall, H. Irwin, J. Patterson and J. McSkimming; secretary, Miss H. Barry; club captain, Mr F. Woodfield; deputy club captain, Miss M. Broad; committee, Messrs J. Boyes, N. Harper, J. O’Kane, P. Robertson, Mrs J. Patterson, Misses M. Myers and M. Broad; delegate to Southland Lawn Tennis Association, Mr J. O’Kane. Opening day was fixed for Saturday, October 4.
