EXTENSION OF CURFEW PURGE OF FREEMASONS BY VICHY (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 20. The Germans have threatened to extend the curfew to Paris for the duration of the war. It is announced from Vichy that nine generals have been removed from the army and the Government in a purge of Freemasons. The secretary-general of police has been removed with the object of strengthening the police against a terror campaign. The Corunna radio reports that five communists were killed and several German soldiers wounded in a street battle in Paris. Several men were arrested in Paris on charges of sabotaging German Army cars. Two Frenchmen were shot for alleged communist propaganda. Five large barns filled with wheat were burned down at Chartres. Paris Radio vehemently appealed to Marshal Petain for strong measures, regardless of rank or position, against those not collaborating. “For every person working for the reconstruction of France 10 are opposing it,” stated the [ radio. “Murder is committed at every street corner in Paris and the underground railway has become an ambush. We want Frenchmen themselves to meet this force with force. Marshal, we ask you to act immediately.” A court-martial in Yugoslavia sentenced to death five alleged communists. SERBIAN GUERRILLAS ACTIVE Reuters Jerusalem correspondent says 20,000 Serbian guerrillas attacked and severed railways southward of Zagreb and stopped traffic for 10 days. It is reported from Rome that a vast forest of fire is raging on the Promontory of Portofino. The cause is not known. According to the Independent French News Agency Vichy has given the Germans the right of transport of war materials from Qabes to Tripolitania. Tripoli is reported to be no longer usable for landing war materials. The railway from Tripoli to Zuara is being hurriedly extended to the Tunisian frontier. Paris Radio stated that 12 French hostages were shot today for an attack on a German soldier last Tuesday. The Air Ministry reports that Italian civilians cheered British bombers attacking munition factories at Licata on Wednesday. Heavy damage was done. FRENCH RESISTANCE (8.0.W.) RUGBY, September 10. “The whole of France is rising up in resistance,” said General Charles de Gaulle, the Free French leader, speaking in a French broadcast. “At the present moment the enemy and the Vichy traitors are in open conflict with the French people. To impose their requirements they have made use of the most vicious system of oppression ever known in history. Yet their censorship does not prevent the world from knowing where the will of France is directed. When the time comes for the democracies to rebuild the world according to the sacred principles of human liberty we shall be able to see what France is and what she is worth.” INTERNMENT CAMPS (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 20. The Swiss radio reports that six new internment camps have been established in Unoccupied France for political agitators and speculators. It added that 13,000 French war prisoners released from Germany have arrived at Compiegne.
