RUSSIANS STILL IN KIEV

HEAVY AND CONTINUOUS BATTLE

RUSSIAN SUCCESSES IN CENTRE

(United Press Association —Te 1 "graph Copyright) (Rec. 10.5 p.m.) LONDON, September 21.

The latest news from Russia is that the Russians are still in Kiev, where a bitter and continuous battle is raging in the suburbs. Piles of bodies and wrecked German tanks and armoured cars clutter the approaches. The Germans are still throwing in more troops. The Germans claim that Stuka and high-level bombers are keeping up a non-stop attack on the Russian forces east of Kiev. Bombers are also plastering the railway and roads leading to the new front line north and south of Kharkov. The Russian thrust in the central front has resulted in General Solvyev’s forces recapturing 14 villages in a 13 mile advance which is continuing. Two German motorized divisions and a tank division were routed.

An Italian report from Bucharest says the Rumanians have reached Jankoi. Russian sappers, after braving a continuous two days’ artillery barrage, blew up the vital bridge linking the island of Hortitza, in the Dnieper, with the western bank. Hortitza is opposite Zaporozhe. Russian marines routed Rumanian and German troops on one sector of the Odessa front and the Germans and Rumanians withdrew to the mouth of the Dniester.
